Engineered Pressure and Flow Control Solutions

Facts About RegFlo™ Gas Flow and Pressure Monitoring Device
The primary function of RegFlo™ is the acquisition and storage of flow and pressure data. It also provides alarm and diagnostic functions relative to these data points. RegFlo™ enables gas utilities to:

  1. Make, take or pay decisions on gas, with increased knowledge of what is happening within their system on a real-time basis.

  2. Obtain information on system integrity and reliability, disclosing areas that are at or near full capacity.

  3. Make more information on what is happening within the system available across all disciplines.

  4. Predict maintenance based on valve usage.

  5. Optimize system, improve asset management.

  6. Provide safety and security.

  7. Use data for calibration and verification of system model.
Flow and Pressure Data

Modular, self-monitoring RegFlo™ is the next step in advanced flow technology from Fisher Controls.

Before RegFlo™ technology, monitoring usage at district stations necessitated installation of expensive metering equipment. Today, information on gas flow is immediately available via computer link from each district regulator outfitted with RegFlo™, so the gas utility company can:

  • Avoid the expense of flow meters at multiple locations
  • Obtain additional information about the overall system

Mounted on a Fisher Type EZR Regulator, RegFlo™ measures and monitors gas flow across the EZR. The module may also be mounted remotely from the regulator and used only to monitor line pressures.

As the valve plug opens, more flow area is available. RegFlo measures the travel of the valve plug and, along with inlet and outlet pressure, estimates a flow based on an algorithm for the valve type, size and construction. (Currently, RegFlo™ fits the 2-inch and 4-inch Fisher EZR with future plans to include all sizes of EZR and 1098EGR regulators.)

RegFlo™ makes data available for a variety of uses, such as gas load forecasting, system balancing and modeling, and pipeline inventory estimations.

Remotely measuring and monitoring gas flow enables gas companies to plan and create a more efficient distribution system, fine-tuning it to maximize usage.

NOTE: It is a U.S. Department of Transportation requirement to document pressure at certain district stations.

Design
RegFlo™ has a simple design, smaller than typical electronic pressure recorders. Easy to start up, RegFlo™ is also easy to configure, with customer-adaptable sample and log intervals.

RegFlo™ is PC-compatible with proprietary RegLink™ software, used to download data locally or over communication channels (dial up, radio, cellular). The convenient menu format enables each utility to design its own system.

RegFlo™ is modular and upgradeable, with the option of 1, 2, or 3 pressure sensors - with or without an EZR regulator. Its rugged construction stands up to harsh and/or hazardous environments (even submersible to 10 feet).

Powering options available include:

  • Battery-powered, with a 14-month battery life, depending on sample rate and communication frequency
  • Externally powered, such as solar-powered

RegFlo™ electronically records and loads time-stamped data, and communicates with its host via radio, telephone or cellular phone.

    Connectivity
Compatible with pipeline modeling software, data from RegFlo™ is used to calibrate and verify assumptions used to develop the model. Enhanced modeling products improve operation efficiencies.

RegFlo™ uses protocols that are supported by numerous Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) hosts. (Automated data acquisition helps SCADA personnel balance load.) Ways to connect include:

  • RegLink™ Local
  • RegLink™ Remote
  • SCADA (existing or new dedicated)

    Safety and Security
RegFlo™ customer-configurable alarming capabilities allow each gas utility to design its own safety strategy.

Multiple password-protected security levels are available.

RegFlo™ undergoes complete laboratory verification, and its explosion-proof housing meets Class 1 Division 1 requirements.

    Savings
RegFlo™ is very economical compared to other flow estimating devices.

RegFlo's contribution to greater system efficiency and productivity can lead to trimming costs, and RegFlo™ may even enable gas utilities to reduce or delay major capital expenditures - such as pipeline construction.

If RegFlo™ helps to avoid just one relight, then it has paid for itself!
