The GridBoss™ System Gas Pressure Control and Management
The new GridBoss™ System gives gas utility companies better control of line pressures to meet the  gas demands of their customers. The benefits of better pressure control, especially in older metropolitan systems, are many and include:
Reduced Lost and Unaccounted-For Gas
  • Less overall leakage through pipe joints and holes
  • Less measurement error
  • Less leakage due to third-party pipe damage
  • Less leakage through devices that bleed gas
Back to Top
Reduced Operation and Maintenance Cost
  • Fewer customer leak complaints
  • Fewer leak repairs
  • No need for seasonal pressure setpoint adjustment
  • Reduced driver windshield time
Improved System Integrity Through Better Control
  • Reduced frequency of pilot relights
  • No need for pressure chart gathering and replacement
  • Up-to-date and better organized distribution system information

GridBoss Gas Pressure Control System

The GridBoss™ Gas Pressure Control System uses a minimum of a GB601 District Regulator (DR) Controller at the district regulator station and a GB602 Low Pressure Point (LPP) Controller at the system low pressure point. The LPP controller gathers pressure data and sends it to the DR controller when it changes beyond a deadband setting. The DR controller incorporates an adaptive/predictive computer algorithm that uses the pressure data to develop setpoint profiles based on the time of day and ambient temperature. The controller uses this information to adjust the setpoint of the district regulator, using an actuator or servo valve, in anticipation of the gas demand.

The two controllers work in tandem to maintain the low pressure point within a specified deadband, thereby reducing average system pressure. In a typical municipal installation, many GridBoss™ district regulator controllers would be employed at regulator stations around a city to control gas pressure based on the time of day and temperature demand profiles derived from the GridBoss™ low pressure point controller.

GridManager™ User Interface

The GridManager™ User Interface uses a Windows NT Workstation running Intellution FIX32 host software and Fisher ROC driver software to retrieve data from, and send information to the gas pressure control system. Data and alarms can be retrieved by the host using automated or manual polling, or sent unsolicited by the control system on a report-by-exception basis.

The GridManager™ provides customers with numerous software tools to get the gas pressure control system up and running quickly. These include step-by-step procedures for system creation, Intellution dynamos for screen building, pre-defined database formats for the GridBoss™ units, and tag name conventions. Sample data screens provided for region selection, region overview, district regulator station, low pressure point site, and detailed monitor and control pop-ups.

System reports are generated in an MS Access database with all available Access query and report capabilities. Sample reports are provided and include weekly pressure report, monthly pressure summary, and system status reports. Other system features include integrated context-sensitive help screens and application specification documentation.

The GridBoss™ Gas Pressure Control System was developed with the assistance of the Gas Research Institute and the Institute of Gas Technology.
